The move clears space for right-hander Matt Pushard to return from a knee injury.

The Cardinals designated left-hander Jared Shuster for assignment on Saturday. The roster move creates space for right-hander Matt Pushard, who is activated off the 15-day injured list after recovering from patellar tendinitis in his right knee. Shuster was previously designated for assignment by Arizona about a month ago before being retained.

Pushard's return fills a rotation or relief slot for a Cardinals team in early May. Shuster's second DFA stint in five weeks indicates the organization has moved on from the left-hander's bid to stick in the major league roster.
