He’s 5-7 with a 3.77 ERA across 119.1 innings, he’s the cheaper contract, and his no-trade protection is only partial — Lugo’s extension, signed days before last year’s deadline, came with a full no-trade clause, and his 4.56 ERA over 100.2 innings this season doesn’t force anyone’s hand. The timing of the report was unkind, though. Wacha took the loss in Thursday’s 7-3 defeat in Queens, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against a Mets lineup that made him work from the first inning on. One start doesn’t reset a market built on a full season of steady mid-rotation work, but with scouts in the building, it wasn’t the audition anyone in Kansas City wanted.
My take: the high price is the right price, even at 38-56. A club this far out gains nothing from moving Wacha for a middling return just to say it did something — the only version of this trade that helps the rebuild is the one where a contender pays a premium in July for three months of a reliable starter. If nobody meets the number, Kansas City keeps a professional innings-eater, tries again in the winter, and loses nothing but a headline. Patience is cheap when the standings already look like this.
For fantasy purposes, Wacha is a hold in deeper leagues through the August 3 deadline — a move to a contender with a better defense and more run support would raise both his win floor and his streaming appeal, and Thursday’s clunker shouldn’t change that calculus. Lugo, with the full no-trade clause and the ratios trending the wrong way, can be safely cut in shallow formats.
