The New York Jets announced Tuesday that fans will get seven chances to watch training camp this summer — and exactly one of them is open to the general public. That lone date is Saturday, Aug. 1, the league-wide Back Together Weekend practice. The other six sessions, including joint practices against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 11 and 12, are reserved for season ticket members.

The stated reason is construction. The second phase of renovations at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center is underway in Florham Park, and the team says the work has significantly reduced available parking and usable space, a rationale ProFootballTalk relayed in its coverage of the announcement. Fans who want a shot at the Aug. 1 session can text TC26 to 26154 and will be notified on July 15. Rookies report July 25 and veterans July 28 for the second camp of the Aaron Glenn era.

It is fair to take the logistics explanation at face value — the construction is real, announced well in advance, and tied to a facility upgrade players will actually use. It is also fair to note what the policy costs. Camp is the one stretch of the year when access to this team is supposed to be free and easy, and a fanbase that has waited out the league’s longest playoff drought now gets a single general-admission date all summer. Both things are true at once, and the franchise earns back the goodwill the old-fashioned way: by being worth watching in September.

For fantasy purposes, the practical effect is an information squeeze. With so few open sessions, depth-chart intel out of Florham Park will flow almost entirely through beat reporting rather than fan video, so treat single-practice narratives with caution. The joint practices against Tampa Bay on Aug. 11-12 become the two most meaningful evaluation days of the Jets’ summer — the best available read on the offensive pecking order and on the open competition behind Geno Smith before draft season locks in.
