The Phillies’ search for a right-handed outfield bat — urgent since Adolis García was lost for the season to a torn lat — has reached the desert. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports Philadelphia has interest in Lourdes Gurriel Jr. should the Arizona Diamondbacks make him available, with the Angels’ Jo Adell among the other names on Philadelphia’s list.

The interest says more about the Phillies’ need than about Gurriel’s season. He reached the break hitting .211/.259/.292 with two home runs and 20 RBIs in 46 games — a year that did not begin until April 18, when he returned from the torn ACL that ended his 2025 in early September. MLB Trade Rumors notes the money complicates any deal: roughly $5.5 million remains on his $13 million salary this season, plus a $5 million buyout on a $14 million club option for 2027. A buyer would be taking on close to $10 million for a bat that has not yet found its pre-injury form.

For Arizona, the question sits inside the larger one Mike Hazen left open at the break. The club is 49-47 and 2.5 games out of the final wild-card spot, and Hazen has said he wants the next few weeks to determine the deadline direction. Moving Gurriel would not conflict with that: a rental corner outfielder in a down year is the kind of piece a club can trade while still chasing a wild card, and it costs Arizona nothing it is counting on for August. Whether it happens likely comes down to how much of the remaining salary Philadelphia will carry — and whether the Phillies talk themselves into the track record over the current form.

In fantasy terms, Gurriel is holding roster spots he is not earning in 12-team leagues, and a report of interest does not change that. A completed trade to Philadelphia would be worth monitoring — an everyday role in a contending lineup would restore some counting-stat value — but until a deal exists, he is a watch-list name, not an add.
