Taylor Ward hit a two-run home run off Bryan King in the eighth inning Friday night, and the Orioles beat the Houston Astros 3-2 for their fifth straight win, the club’s longest streak of the season.

Ward’s seventh homer followed a leadoff double by Adley Rutschman and accounted for the only Baltimore runs after the second inning. The Orioles managed five hits all night against a Houston staff that had Peter Lambert at his sharpest: six innings, three hits, one earned run, 10 strikeouts on 104 pitches. Baltimore’s offense drew eight walks and stranded most of them.

What has actually driven this streak is run prevention. Dean Kremer was not efficient — four innings, four hits, two earned runs, three walks, 83 pitches — but five relievers covered the last five innings without allowing a run. Cam Sanders, acquired from the Pirates for cash on July 13, got the win in his Orioles debut with two-thirds of an inning. Andrew Kittredge worked a scoreless seventh and Tyler Wells finished it. Per the Associated Press, Baltimore has held every opponent to three runs or fewer across all five games of the streak, which began July 9 against the Cubs.

Five wins do not undo the first half. Baltimore is 47-51, 10 games behind Tampa Bay in the American League East and two out of the final wild card, and the run differential is still negative at 450-468. But it does change the shape of the next two weeks. Mike Elias said before the break that the Orioles intend to add, and the games between now and August 3 will determine whether that intention survives contact with the standings.

In fantasy terms, Ward is the relevant name here beyond the box score: he has been discussed in trade speculation, and a move to a contender would likely mean a better lineup slot, so he is worth holding through a cold week rather than dropping. Wells recorded the save Friday, and with Ryan Helsley reported to be dealing with inflammation around his UCL, he is the Baltimore reliever to speculate on in saves leagues. Kremer is a matchup-only start until the pitch efficiency improves.
