The Yankees have spent the last week narrowing what they will and will not do before the August 3 trade deadline. As covered here on July 14, the roster’s two clearest holes are a right-handed-hitting catcher and high-leverage relief. Two reports since have added the other half of the picture: what the front office is not shopping for, and what it will not trade.
Jon Heyman reported that New York is not prioritizing shortstop, which effectively closes the speculation about Francisco Lindor as a cross-town fit with the Mets in sell mode. That is a defensible read of the roster. José Caballero and Amed Rosario are not the problem on a team that has scored 463 runs, third-most in the American League. The problem is a bullpen being asked to protect one-run games and a catching spot that gives back at-bats against left-handed pitching.
On the cost side, Last Word on Sports reported that right-hander Elmer Rodriguez is the most realistic significant prospect the Yankees would move, with top prospect George Lombard Jr. and right-hander Carlos Lagrange described as off the table. New York has also been linked to Padres closer Mason Miller, who carried a 0.91 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings into the break and is under control through 2029. That combination — a target that good, controlled that long, and two names the Yankees will not include — is why a Miller deal is easier to like than to complete.
The standings do not give New York much room to be patient. The Yankees are 54-43, 2.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the East, and they are playing without Aaron Judge until at least September. Holding the top wild card is not the goal, and a club with this rotation should not settle for it.
For fantasy purposes, the practical note is Miller. He remains a top-five closer to roster wherever he pitches, and a trade to New York would not threaten his save opportunities — it would likely increase them given how many close games this team plays. Yankees catchers stay unrosterable in one-catcher formats until the position is addressed.
