The NFL suspended Arizona Cardinals director of college scouting Ryan Gold indefinitely on Friday after an investigation found he violated the league’s gambling policy. According to the Associated Press, Gold participated in bets on NFL and college football games and revealed confidential information about the Cardinals’ 2026 draft selections before the picks were announced.

“The Gambling Policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, strictly prohibits anyone in the NFL from participating in or facilitating any form of sports gambling, and from providing third parties non-public information,” the league said in a statement. “Although there is no reason to believe the integrity of any NFL game was affected, the League takes any violation of the Gambling Policy with the utmost seriousness.”

Gold was entering his 13th season with the organization and had worked his way up through the personnel department, serving as college scouting coordinator and assistant director of college scouting before his promotion to director of college scouting in June 2025, per Fox News. He has the right to appeal the suspension.

The Cardinals moved quickly to frame the matter as contained. “The NFL’s policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated,” the team said in a statement. “We fully support the league’s decision in this matter, which involves a single employee. Our focus remains on preparing for the start of training camp next week and the 2026 season.”

The timing still stings for a front office that has staked its rebuild on the draft. The college scouting department Gold helped run assembled the young core Arizona is counting on — the pipeline that delivered Marvin Harrison Jr., this spring’s Jeremiyah Love pick at No. 3 overall, and the rest of a roster built almost entirely through April. Losing its director indefinitely, days before players report on July 22, means someone else runs the fall scouting calendar: school visits, all-star game prep and the early build of the 2027 board all start during camp.

The league did not announce a timetable for reinstatement, and the draft-information piece of the finding — sharing picks before they were made — is the detail that separates this from a simple betting violation. For a scouting operation whose entire value rests on keeping its own board secret, that is the part the organization will have to answer for internally, whatever the appeal brings.
