The Washington Wizards finished their Las Vegas Summer League run without any of the lottery picks who headlined it, and won anyway. Washington beat the Atlanta Hawks 91-83 in Saturday night’s finale to close the trip at 3-2, with Reece Beekman running the show: 13 points, 14 assists and six rebounds in 31 minutes.
The Wizards had already shut down AJ Dybantsa, Will Riley and Tre Johnson for the remainder of Vegas, so Saturday belonged to the players fighting for the fringes of the roster. John Camden made the strongest impression, scoring 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting with four threes, and Chris Livingston added 20 on 15 shots.
The game turned on the arc. Washington hit 10 of 26 three-point attempts; Atlanta went 5-of-31, with Devon Higgs supplying 22 points and seven rebounds but the roster around him combining to shoot 4-of-24 from deep. Beekman’s 14 assists against a defense selling out to run shooters off the line kept Washington’s offense organized in a game neither side could pull away from until the fourth.
The result matters less than what the week established. Washington went 3-2 with its three first-year guards playing only part of the schedule, and the summer staff got five games of tape on the two-way and camp-contract tier that will fill out the back of a rebuilding rotation. That is the part of a rebuild that rarely makes headlines and decides half the roster battles in October.
For fantasy purposes, nobody from this game moves a redraft board. Beekman’s floor generalship is worth a note in deep dynasty leagues if he lands a two-way role, and Camden’s shooting keeps his name alive for a camp invite, but the Wizards names that matter — Dybantsa, Riley, Johnson — ended their summers earlier in the week with their stock unchanged.
