Anyone expecting an Aaron Donald answer by the time the Los Angeles Rams report Saturday should recalibrate. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Tuesday that no immediate decision or signing is coming on Donald’s potential comeback. "He’s not gonna come back until he feels like he’s ready to be Aaron Donald again," Schefter said, adding that the process is not going to move fast and that Donald may not be back in a Rams uniform "until early this season."
Per Pro Football Rumors, Donald is focused on getting back into football shape after two years away, and there is no timeline attached to that work. Any decision is unlikely to arrive until Los Angeles is well into camp.
The harder question is the money. Donald retired with one year and $30 million remaining on his last extension, per OverTheCap’s Jason Fitzgerald, and the eight-time All-Pro could seek more than that. Schefter cautioned that the Rams may balk at that figure for a 35-year-old who last played in 2023 and could instead pursue what he called a compromise contract that works for both sides. The cap sheet backs him up: Los Angeles sits just under $19 million in space, per OverTheCap, so a full $30 million would require restructuring other deals or restructuring Donald’s own to push money into future years.
That is the real shape of this negotiation. The Rams already committed premium resources to the defensive front this offseason, sending Jared Verse and three premium picks to Cleveland for Myles Garrett, and the roster around Donald is built to win now. A midseason arrival at a reduced number may end up suiting both sides — the Rams keep flexibility, and Donald skips the camp grind he no longer needs.
Veterans report July 25. Donald’s locker, presumably, can wait a little longer.
