The short answer
Stephen Curry attended Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, North Carolina from 2002 to 2006. The school is a small private K-12 program β€” Curry’s senior class had 60 students. He led the Knights to three conference titles and three state-tournament appearances while playing under varsity head coach Shonn Brown, with his father Dell Curry (the former NBA player) serving as a regular assistant during practices.

Why Charlotte Christian instead of Charlotte's powerhouse public schools

Stephen was born in Akron, Ohio (where his father played for the Cavaliers) and moved to Charlotte at age four when Dell signed with the Hornets in 1998. The family settled in the Davidson area north of Charlotte. They picked Charlotte Christian over the larger Charlotte-Mecklenburg public-school district partly for class size, partly for academic rigor, and partly because the school had a tight-knit basketball program where Dell could be present as a parent volunteer without it becoming a media circus.

Stephen was 5’7″ and 130 pounds entering high school. His shooting form β€” the now-iconic high-arc release with a quick gather β€” was largely developed during these years on a backyard hoop next to the family home. Dell rebuilt his son’s mechanics over the summer between sophomore and junior year because Stephen’s release was too low to get over taller defenders.

Three state-tournament runs, no big-college offers

Curry averaged 20.5 points, 5.4 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game as a senior. The Charlotte Christian Knights went 23-7 and reached the 1A state semifinals. He was named MVP of his conference all four years he played varsity β€” only the third Charlotte Christian player ever to do that.

But major Power-6 college programs passed. Duke, North Carolina, NC State, and Wake Forest all sent letters but offered no scholarships. The official knock was size. Davidson College β€” a small Division I school 15 minutes from his house β€” offered him their last available scholarship in March 2006. Coach Bob McKillop had been recruiting him since 8th grade. Curry committed within 24 hours.

Charlotte Christian after Curry

Charlotte Christian retired Curry’s #20 jersey in a ceremony in February 2018 β€” the school’s first-ever retirement of a varsity jersey. Curry was at the ceremony with his wife Ayesha and daughter Riley. He spoke for 12 minutes about Coach Brown’s role in his career and noted that the gym had not been air-conditioned during his playing days. Charlotte Christian air-conditioned the gym in 2017.

His younger brother Seth Curry also attended Charlotte Christian (graduated 2008) and went on to play in the NBA. Their sister Sydel attended as well and played volleyball at Elon. The school’s enrollment doubled between 2010 and 2020, partly attributed to the Curry family connection. Stephen still donates significantly to the athletic department; the school built the Stephen Curry Court inside the new athletic building in 2020.
