The Baltimore Orioles have won four in a row, and they take that into the All-Star break feeling better than they have in weeks. It is worth enjoying and worth keeping in proportion. Baltimore is 46-51, 11.5 games back in the American League East, and a good week in July does not rewrite what the front office has to decide by August 3.

Sunday’s 8-2 win over Kansas City was the best kind, the sort where the pitching and the lineup both show up. Leody Taveras homered and drove in three, breaking out of a hitless stretch, and Samuel Basallo added a homer of his own. Gunnar Henderson had three hits. The arm that mattered most was Shane Baz, who struck out nine over 4 2/3 innings, the bullpen carrying it the rest of the way.

Why it matters

None of that changes the position. Baltimore entered the season with expectations and has spent it climbing out of a hole rather than contending, and the reporting reflects it. The Baltimore Sun this week ran through nine names the club could move if it sells, and a Camden Chat fan survey found roughly two-thirds already expect a sell-off. The most cited trade pieces are left-hander Trevor Rogers, a free agent this winter, and outfielder Taylor Ward. A hybrid deadline, moving expiring contracts while keeping controllable players, is the realistic path, and it is the honest one for a team this far back.

The clear-eyed way to hold both thoughts: the four-game streak is real and a nice send-off into the break, and it does not move the Orioles close enough to matter. Winning in the middle of July is how you build the case for the young players who will still be here in September, not for a playoff push that the standings do not support.

For fantasy, Basallo is the name to prioritize, a young catcher with real power whose playing time should only grow in a second half oriented toward development. Baz is a strong strikeout source when healthy, though the short outing is a reminder to watch his workload; Taveras is a streaky bat best used in favorable matchups.
