The 28-year-old left-hander becomes a free agent after Boston's roster reduction.

The Red Sox released left-hander Joe La Sorsa, dropping their 40-man roster to 38. La Sorsa, 28, will become a free agent once he clears release waivers. The move came without prior notice of a roster removal, suggesting a quick front-office decision in the stretch run.

La Sorsa has spent most of the season in Triple-A, where he was a depth arm for Boston's pitching depth. The release opens a spot on the roster ahead of September call-ups and the final month of the playoff push.
