The Mets lose their most effective starter to a line-drive injury.
Mets starter Clay Holmes was hit by a line drive Friday night and sustained a fractured fibula, forcing him to the injured list for an extended absence. Holmes, 33, entered Friday's game with a 1.75 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts over 36 innings across six starts this season.
The injury removes New York's top rotation arm from the May schedule at a point when the team's pitching depth will be tested. Holmes had been the Mets' most reliable starter early in the season.
