A historical look at the goal that changed Detroit's hockey future.

On this date in 1997, Steve Yzerman broke a scoreless Game 7 tie against St. Louis with a double-overtime slap shot from center ice, lifting the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup Finals and igniting the franchise's dominant run. The goal ended a tense, defensive playoff battle and sent Detroit toward its first Cup championship in 42 years.

Yzerman, the Red Wings captain and center, had carried the team through the postseason before delivering the series-clinching moment. The victory marked the beginning of Detroit's mid-to-late 1990s dynasty, which would include back-to-back Cups in 1997 and 1998.
