The former catcher was part of Toronto's original 1977 roster.
Rick Cerone celebrates his 72nd birthday today. The former catcher was one of the original Blue Jays, acquired by Toronto four months before their inaugural 1977 season in a trade that sent Rico Carty to Cleveland.
Cerone arrived as part of the franchise's foundation-building effort alongside John Lowenstein. The trade represented an early roster gamble: the Jays had selected Carty from Cleveland in the expansion draft, then reacquired him in March 1978 before moving him again to make room for Cerone.
