Atlanta’s offensive coordinator says the competition for the starting job is on hold while the rookie recovers from ACL surgery.
Falcons offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said the quarterback competition won’t begin until Michael Penix is medically cleared. Penix, the team’s first-round pick in April, is almost seven months removed from ACL surgery and remains in recovery.
The Falcons drafted Penix while Kirk Cousins is under contract at the position, setting up a potential depth-chart battle once Penix is healthy enough to practice. Van Pelt’s statement signals that timeline remains uncertain during the current offseason period of rookie minicamp and OTAs.
