Milwaukee locks in its outfield prospect before he reaches arbitration or free agency.

The Milwaukee Brewers signed outfield prospect Luis Lara to a seven-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. Lara, 23, has been a consistent piece in the Brewers' minor-league system and represents part of the organization's push to secure young talent before the arbitration clock starts.

The extension removes Lara from the free-agent market and buys out future earning potential; the Brewers gain roster flexibility and cost certainty on a prospect they view as part of their long-term outfield core. The deal's specific terms were not disclosed.
