San Diego clears a roster spot with the shortstop back in the lineup.

The Padres designated Bryce Johnson for assignment, freeing roster space as Xander Bogaerts returns to the lineup. Johnson, a 30-year-old right fielder in his fifth season, had appeared in 17 games with a .217 average (5-for-23) and 2 RBI this year.

Bogaerts, 33, has played in 30 games this season with a .268 average (30-for-112), 5 home runs, and 17 RBI. The shortstop's return gives San Diego more depth at a premium position as the season approaches the All-Star break.
