Gaines is not a stranger arriving cold. He had previously served as Leonard’s business attorney, per ESPN’s reporting, and now steps into the agent-of-record role held by Mitch Frankel — a structure in which Leonard’s uncle, Dennis Robertson, has long played an outsized part. Whatever the internal reasons for the change, the practical effect for Toronto is a clearly designated negotiator with an established relationship to the player, in place before the first formal conversation.
The numbers on that table are already defined. Leonard has one year and $50.3 million remaining on his current deal, and he is eligible to sign an extension of up to two years and $123.7 million that would carry him through 2028-29. During the trade talks, Leonard’s representatives told teams around the league that he intended to extend only with the Raptors — the signal that narrowed his market and let Toronto land him for the package of Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and unprotected future firsts it agreed to send out.
That is why the agent hire matters more than most representation news. Toronto paid a premium built on the assumption that the commitment is real, and an extension signed this summer is the only document that converts assumption into fact. A 35-year-old Leonard on a signed three-year runway is a plan; a 35-year-old Leonard on an expiring deal is a countdown. The scouting file on this front office says it knows the difference — the franchise’s 2019 title came from exactly this trade shape, and the lesson of that July was that the ring arrived and the extension never did.
