The Portland Trail Blazers‘ new head coach has now said in public what the front office had been telling teams in private. “I know a lot of people think that these are going to be chain-reaction trades — and who knows how it is going to go, but Jrue Holiday is a big part of what we’ve got going,” Micah Nori told Jason Quick of The Athletic. “And I just want to let him know that I’m going to continue putting him in positions to be successful, and that he’s earned the right to talk to me about what he is comfortable doing.”
Portland had already been telling Holiday suitors the 36-year-old guard is not available, per earlier reporting from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer. Nori’s comments close the gap between message and messenger: coach and front office are aligned, on the record, that Holiday stays.
That certainty lands hardest on Scoot Henderson. The backcourt now holds four players who have spent their careers as lead guards — Ja Morant, Damian Lillard, Holiday and Henderson — and only one of them is a 22-year-old former No. 3 overall pick entering the final season of his rookie contract. Every acquisition Portland has made at the position since drafting him — Holiday for Anfernee Simons a year ago, Lillard’s return, now the Morant trade — has been a vote of something other than confidence in Henderson’s timeline matching the team’s.
The rebuild-tracking view: this roster has quietly stopped being one. Teams collecting 36-year-old defensive guards and paying the price Portland paid for Morant are trying to win now, and the question that follows is what a win-now team does with a former cornerstone prospect it no longer builds around. Henderson’s trade value is a genuine unknown — suppressed by his uneven three seasons, propped up by age and pedigree — and an extension conversation would sit awkwardly next to this depth chart.
Nothing is imminent, and nothing reported suggests Portland is shopping him. But when a coach publicly guarantees minutes and role to three veteran guards, the fourth name on the list is the one whose phone matters this month.
