Sean Deveney of Heavy reported Sunday that if Cleveland builds a sign-and-trade package to bring LeBron James home, Jarrett Allen “could be the bait” — and that a deal centered on Allen is far more probable than anything involving Evan Mobley.
The logic is about the cap sheet as much as the roster. Allen is signed for three more years and roughly $90 million — a healthy but movable number for a starting-caliber center — and he is the one Cleveland starter whose job overlaps with Mobley’s. As CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland detailed when James first hit the market, the Cavaliers are too deep into the luxury tax to simply sign a max-level player; a sign-and-trade is the realistic route, and executing one hard-caps the team at the first apron. Under that ceiling, Cleveland cannot fit James, a market-rate deal for James Harden — who declined his option expecting one — and a full supporting cast. Something has to give, and Allen’s salary is the piece that makes the math work.
It is worth being precise about what this is: a reporter mapping the likeliest path, not word of an agreement. The front office’s public position is still that it intends to run back the group that reached the Eastern Conference finals, and James’ agent, Rich Paul, said Saturday that no decision is coming “anytime soon.” But the timing matters now in a way it did not last week. For Cleveland, the basketball trade-off is real. Allen and Mobley have been the defensive backbone of an elite regular-season team, and moving Allen means trusting Mobley as the full-time center with James sliding in beside him. That lineup offers more shooting and playmaking around Donovan Mitchell; it also surrenders the interior size that made this team hard to score on. The homecoming would not be free.
