The Houston Rockets agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal with Marcus Smart, with a player option on the second season, per Shams Charania of ESPN. That came hours after a reported one-year deal with Bogdan Bogdanovic, and after Fred VanVleet exercised his $25 million player option. The question worth sitting with now, as the moratorium lifts and the ink dries: where does all of this leave Reed Sheppard?
The case for Smart is straightforward. He is a former Defensive Player of the Year reuniting with Ime Udoka, and Houston watched him up close in April, when he averaged 14.7 points, 5.5 assists and 2.7 steals for the Lakers in their six-game first-round win over the Rockets. His regular season was more modest — 9.3 points, 3.0 assists and 1.4 steals across 62 games — but Houston is not paying $6.5 million a year for scoring. It is paying for the point-of-attack defense and organizational toughness that series exposed.
The complication is arithmetic. VanVleet, Smart and Bogdanovic are three veteran guards on a roster that also features Amen Thompson, who has already claimed his minutes. Sheppard enters his third season — the year a top-three pick is supposed to move from prospect to rotation fixture — competing with two new veterans for the backcourt minutes behind them.
My read: this is a challenge, not a burial. Bogdanovic is on a one-year deal and Smart’s guarantee is functionally one year plus an option, so nothing here blocks Sheppard past next June. What the front office has really done is remove the safety net of automatic minutes. If Sheppard shoots the way Houston drafted him to shoot, the floor time is there — Udoka has never been shy about playing whoever defends and makes shots, whatever the draft slot. If he doesn’t, the Rockets have made sure the fallback is a Defensive Player of the Year rather than a shrug.
For a team that believes its young core is going up a weight class, that is the correct kind of pressure. Now it’s on Sheppard to answer it.
