Veterans report July 28, and the first practice is July 29.
Penix tore his left ACL in Week 11 last season and spent the spring on a restricted plan: throwing drills in May, individual and group work in June, but no 11-on-11. He was candid that he still isn’t 100 percent. What changed is the timeline — per ESPN’s reporting, he is expected to be cleared for full team drills by the start of camp, which is the threshold Atlanta’s coaching staff set back in June before any competition could begin.
That competition is the whole story of Atlanta’s summer. Tua Tagovailoa signed a one-year deal in March after the Falcons released Kirk Cousins, and head coach Kevin Stefanski has split reps between the two left-handers all offseason rather than naming a starter. Tagovailoa brings far more NFL snaps; Penix is the developmental investment the franchise drafted eighth overall to build around. A camp battle between a rehabbed knee and a veteran on a prove-it contract only works as a fair fight if the knee is genuinely ready — and until this week, that was an open question.
The measured read: “expects to be” is doing real work in that sentence. Expected clearance is not clearance, and July optimism about November knees is a genre with a long history. But the recovery has hit every public checkpoint so far, and the team built its calendar around this date months ago. The Falcons will hold 10 practices open to fans, beginning with a season-ticket-member session July 31 — meaning the reps that decide the QB1 job will be visible almost immediately.
