The Philadelphia 76ers are one of three teams that have separated themselves in the pursuit of LeBron James, alongside Cleveland and Miami, per Shams Charania of ESPN — and reporting from Yahoo Sports adds that James is taking Philadelphia’s pitch “really seriously.” Written from this desk, the operative fact is simpler: the Sixers are genuinely in this, and they are running the recruitment like an organization that expects to win it.

The public-facing campaign has been unusually coordinated. Bob Myers, the former Warriors architect now running basketball for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, appeared on Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul’s “Game Over” podcast and made the case directly to James’s agent that Philadelphia offers the “best chance to win” in a 24th season. That is not an accident of booking. And Jaylen Brown — a Sixer for all of a week — spent part of an IShowSpeed World Cup appearance openly recruiting James to Philadelphia, per Bleacher Report.

The team-building logic is easy to follow. Philadelphia just paid four picks and matched salary to put Brown, in his prime and coming off an All-NBA season, next to Joel Embiid. Adding James would turn a two-star bet into the league’s most talent-dense frontcourt on paper, with Brown absorbing the perimeter creation load that James, at 41, no longer needs to carry nightly. The counterargument is equally plain: Embiid’s health remains the franchise’s load-bearing wall, and James has watched teams sell him a finished contender before. What Philadelphia is really selling is redundancy — enough high-end talent that no single body has to hold up for nine months.

Owner Josh Harris was reported by The Ringer’s Zach Lowe to have been “fixated” on landing Brown. The through line of this offseason is an ownership group acting like the window is now and the cost is negotiable. Whether James agrees may decide how this whole roster is judged.

For fantasy purposes, a James signing would compress usage across the board in Philadelphia — Brown and Embiid would each shed a few possessions a night, and James himself would likely settle into the lower-30s minutes range with elite efficiency. Until he decides, treat every Sixer’s draft position as provisional; the difference between this roster with and without James is a full round of ADP for the supporting cast.
