Friday’s 14-1 loss to the White Sox was the Athletics‘ seventh consecutive defeat, and the number worth sitting with isn’t the streak itself — it’s the shape of it. Over these seven games the A’s have been outscored 58-20, an average deficit of more than five runs a night. This is not a stretch of close losses breaking the wrong way.
The slide runs in three acts: a home sweep at the hands of Miami from July 3-5, a road sweep in Detroit from July 7-9, and now the opener in Chicago, where Aaron Civale lasted 2.1 innings and allowed four runs, and Tyler Soderstrom‘s solo home run accounted for the only offense. The A’s are 1-9 in their last 10, and at 41-53 they sit fourth in the AL West, seven games behind first-place Texas and five and a half back of the American League’s final wild-card spot.
Run prevention is the through line. Opponents have scored six or more runs in six of the seven losses, and the staff has now absorbed a 14-run game on top of back-to-back series in which the offense managed four total runs in Detroit. Sports Illustrated’s A’s site reported this week that Nick Kurtz and J.T. Ginn have been day-to-day with illness and Shea Langeliers has been managing a thumb issue, which explains some of the thin lineups, though not a five-runs-per-game gap.
The calendar is the uncomfortable part. The trade deadline is August 3, and a roster that stood at .500 as recently as June 19 has since gone 3-15, three weeks of results that now frame every conversation about its veterans. Nothing has been reported yet about the front office’s direction, and this desk won’t invent it — but the difference between retooling and standing pat usually gets decided by stretches exactly like this one.
For fantasy purposes, treat A’s pitching as off-limits until the staff strings together some competitive starts — there’s no matchup soft enough right now. Jacob Wilson and Soderstrom remain rosterable on their bats alone, and Kurtz’s illness is worth monitoring in redraft leagues since his at-bats drive most of this lineup’s fantasy value.
