The Washington Commanders spent the No. 7 overall pick on Sonny Styles to modernize the middle of their defense, and the early returns from the coaching staff could hardly read better. Head coach Dan Quinn, in comments published on the team’s website and circulated this week by NFLTradeRumors.co, said the rookie linebacker has cleared every offseason checkpoint the staff set for him.
“I’d say he has hit all the marks that you can hit at this time of year,” Quinn said. “The knowledge, the intensity to go for it … He has absolutely nailed all the markers up to now and we’ll kind of continue that as we get into training camp, but he’s off to a hell of a start.”
The more interesting Quinn comment was the comparison he reached for. “I just felt like he has a demeanor that is very much in control, similar to Jayden [Daniels] in that way where above the surface he just has a good demeanor,” Quinn said. “You have to really know it to have that where you’re not sped up so you can tell he’s put the work in to dig in to get into that spot.”
Coaches praise rookies in July as a matter of routine, so the useful test is specificity, and Quinn’s passes it. “Not sped up” is the phrase defensive coaches use for a player whose processing keeps pace with NFL tempo — the single hardest thing to project in a college linebacker — and invoking Daniels, the franchise’s measuring stick for professional composure, is not a comparison a head coach makes carelessly about a player seven months into the building. The unanswered questions are the padded ones: run fits against NFL blocking angles and coverage reps against starting tight ends. Those answers start arriving when camp opens later this month, but a top-ten pick entering camp with the mental side already banked is exactly the progress report this regime needed from its biggest defensive investment.
For fantasy purposes this is an IDP note, and a meaningful one: a first-round linebacker whose coach is signaling an every-down role from day one is a tackle-volume bet worth making. Styles belongs in the LB2 conversation with LB1 upside in IDP rookie drafts, and his dynasty stock rises further if camp reports confirm he keeps the green dot conversation alive into August.
