Cam Skattebo‘s recovery has been the quietest important story of the New York Giants‘ offseason, and after returning to the field at June’s mandatory minicamp, the running back just received the strongest public endorsement yet. Head coach John Harbaugh, speaking in comments relayed by Pro Football Talk this week, said he has no concern about Skattebo coming off the injury that ended his last season.
“I thought he was just what you saw, a downhill runner, a tone-setter type runner,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a tough tackle. That’s what you look for. How many guys can make yards when they’re not supposed to make yards on their own? It seems to me he was that kind of guy at Arizona State and the exact same guy that I saw on tape last year. He’s a top-tier back, and he’s planning on playing that way this year.”
Take the compliment, but read the structure underneath it. A head coach declaring a returning back “top-tier” in July is also declaring the depth chart: the Giants have not spent this offseason acquiring a hedge at the position, and Harbaugh’s comments confirm the plan is Skattebo as the engine of the run game, full stop. That is a front-office bet as much as a coaching opinion. If the medical staff is right, the roster-building looks smart. If a back whose game is built on contact comes back a half-step slower, the Giants have no established fallback — and that accountability will sit with the people who chose not to buy insurance, not with the player.
The encouraging part is that Harbaugh’s praise is specific rather than promotional — tough tackle, yards beyond the blocking, tone-setter — the traits that show up on film regardless of scheme. Camp at the end of July brings the first padded answer.
For fantasy managers, the coach just told you the plan: no pitch count, no committee language, a bell-cow role for a back who earns yards after contact. Skattebo’s draft price still carries an injury discount, which makes him one of the better mid-round bets at the position — with the obvious caveat that the discount exists for a reason. In dynasty, this is the window to buy before August practice reports close it.
