The Seattle Mariners‘ shopping list is coming into focus, and it looks a lot like the roster’s box scores. According to The Seattle Times, cited in MLB Trade Rumors’ deadline outlook on the club this week, Seattle’s front office has identified two priorities before the August 3 trade deadline: a quality right-handed bat that can handle left-handed pitching, and a proven relief arm. The same outlook notes the offense ranks last in baseball with an 80 wRC+ against lefties this season.

The timing of the report is not flattering. Seattle has lost four straight — a three-game sweep in Miami followed by Friday’s 7-2 loss in Tampa — and at 47-48 the Mariners have slipped 1.5 games behind Texas in the AL West. This is still a team that reached the ALCS last October, and the division remains winnable, which is exactly why the reported posture is to add rather than retreat.

The complicated name in all of this is Luis Castillo. MLB Trade Rumors floated in the same outlook that Seattle could finally have a window to move the veteran right-hander, but the performance makes that a hard sell right now: Castillo is 3-8 with a 4.93 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP through 15 starts, and on Friday he allowed four earned runs on nine hits over five innings. Contenders pay for track record in July, but they pay more for current form, and Castillo’s ledger this season offers little of it.

The reliever piece deserves the most attention. Four straight losses tend to get pinned on the lineup, but tight games in September are decided by the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, and a front office that goes shopping for a “proven” arm is telling you it doesn’t fully trust its bridge to the ninth. What Seattle does here will say more about its October ambitions than any bat it adds.

For fantasy purposes, Castillo is a matchup-only start until the results say otherwise, and his trade situation adds ballpark risk in either direction. If Seattle lands a right-handed bat, the short side of its outfield and DH platoons loses at-bats first — worth remembering before bidding on any Mariners hitter whose value depends on facing lefties.
