He arrives coming off one of the more efficient seasons of his career: 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds a night on 55.2 percent shooting overall and 40.6 percent from three. That combination — a big who can finish inside and space the floor — is exactly the profile a young Detroit offense has lacked.
The structure of the deal is telling. Only the first year of the three is guaranteed, and because the Pistons acquired Collins without sending matching salary, the Clippers generated a traded player exception in return. The fit is what should excite Detroit. The one piece of unfinished business is Jalen Duren, whose restricted free agency the front office has been content to let sit, confident it holds the leverage. Pairing a stretch four with Duren’s rim-running is the sort of complementary construction that turns a play-in roster into a playoff one.
In fantasy terms, Collins should stabilize as a back-end starter or strong bench forward, with his value tied to volume in a clearer role than he had in Los Angeles. The three-point stroke is the swing skill — if the 40 percent mark holds on decent volume, he is a category-friendly source of boards, threes and efficiency. His arrival modestly caps the frontcourt ceilings around him, so monitor how minutes settle between Collins and Detroit’s bigs before draft day.
