The Oklahoma City Thunder dropped their Las Vegas Summer League opener 96-84 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, per ESPN’s box score, a game that turned on a 33-23 Lakers third quarter and 20 Oklahoma City turnovers.
First-round pick Bennett Stirtz led the Thunder with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, hitting 3 of 8 from three in 28 minutes. It was the shot-making the front office drafted him for at No. 16, though the four turnovers attached to it were part of a team-wide problem — Oklahoma City gave the ball away 20 times against a Lakers group that converted those empty possessions into a 54 percent shooting night.
Second-year forward Brooks Barnhizer posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Josh Dix added 8 points on a pair of threes. The most-watched debut was quieter: 7-foot-3 first-rounder Aday Mara finished with two points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes, showing the rim presence that made him the No. 12 pick without finding much offensively. Adou Thiero scored 20 and Arthur Kaluma went a perfect 5-for-5 for 18 off the bench to lead Los Angeles.
None of this dents the development case. Summer League exists precisely so Stirtz can absorb NBA ball pressure and Mara can learn where his catches come from, and a July loss costs the champions nothing. The turnover count is the number worth tracking when the Thunder play their second Vegas game.
In fantasy terms, Oklahoma City’s roster depth makes every one of these names a long-view play. Stirtz is the one worth rostering in deeper dynasty formats — the shooting is real and guard minutes eventually open on every roster — while Mara is a multi-year stash whose blocks will only matter once a rotation role exists. Barnhizer’s motor plays in the NBA, but on the defending champions his redraft value this season is effectively nil.
