Video: Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks continued reshaping their roster around a new core, acquiring guard Caris LeVert from the Detroit Pistons for Taurean Prince and Gary Harris, per ESPN. Detroit also sent two second-round picks to Milwaukee, and the deal is folded into a larger six-team transaction that touches Washington, Dallas, Memphis and the Los Angeles Clippers.

The trade lands in the middle of the most significant summer in recent Milwaukee history. Having sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami in the deal that brought back Tyler Herro and a young frontcourt, the Bucks are no longer building around a singular MVP and instead need players who can create and keep an offense organized. LeVert, who can handle the ball and score in stretches, fits that brief more cleanly than the two shooters heading the other way.

Why it matters

The on-paper cost is real, though. Prince has shot better than 43 percent from three across the last two seasons, and spacing is exactly what a retooling roster tends to miss most. LeVert, meanwhile, is coming off a difficult year in Detroit, where he averaged a career-low 7.4 points in 19.2 minutes per game in a reduced role. Harris, 31, appeared in 48 games for Milwaukee last season and averaged 2.7 points. Milwaukee is betting that LeVert’s shot-creation returns closer to his career norm with a larger role than the one he held with the Pistons.

Whether this nudges the championship window back open is a longer question than one trade can answer. What it does is give the Bucks a ball-handler to pair with Herro and a clearer sense of how the post-Giannis rotation might function, which is the more immediate need.

For fantasy managers, the change of scenery lifts LeVert’s redraft stock: a bigger role and more on-ball reps in Milwaukee point toward a rebound in points, assists and three-point volume after a lost season. Prince’s value dips slightly in Detroit’s crowded wing group, where his minutes are less certain, while Harris remains outside standard-league relevance. LeVert is the one worth adding back to draft boards.
