The Ravens have signed center Ethan Pocic, the team announced Friday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the terms: one year, with a maximum value of $4.5 million.
The timing is the tell. Pocic was reported cleared for training camp on Wednesday, per NFL.com’s roundup that day. Two days later he had a contract. That sequence — medical clearance, then signature — is how teams handle a veteran coming back from a torn Achilles, and it explains why a player with Pocic’s starting record was still available in the middle of July.
What Baltimore is buying is experience at a position where experience is most of the job. Pocic has made 97 career starts, the last four seasons of them with Cleveland. A center who has taken that many snaps knows the protection calls, and the incentive-laden structure of the deal means the Ravens pay the full freight only if he holds up.
There is also the small matter of where he came from. Pocic spent four years with the Browns, meaning Baltimore just added an interior lineman with a working knowledge of an AFC North defense it sees twice a year.
He arrives with camp days away rather than weeks, which is the point. A one-year deal at this price is not a commitment — it’s a bet that a healthy Pocic in August is worth considerably more than $4.5 million, and a low-cost exit if he isn’t.
