Bexar County commissioners have approved the San Antonio Spurs‘ request to play up to four home games outside the county in each of the next two seasons, per Hoops Rumors. The Spurs lease the Frost Bank Center from the county, which is why the arrangement requires commissioner sign-off at all.
The immediate application is already on the calendar. San Antonio meets the New Orleans Pelicans in Paris and Manchester in January 2027, and ESPN reported the Paris game will count as a Spurs home date. That is one of the four. The team has previously staged “home” games in Austin, Mexico City and France, and the approval formalizes a practice the franchise has been building toward for years.
The reasoning is not complicated: San Antonio is the smallest market in the league that currently employs the most globally marketable young player in it. Victor Wembanyama is French, and a Spurs home game in Paris is worth considerably more to the franchise’s international business than the same game against the same opponent at Frost Bank Center. The five-year, $252 million extension he signed this month gives the team runway to plan around him through 2031-32.
The cost lands on season-ticket holders, who lose up to four dates a year from the package they paid for, and on the roster, which absorbs the travel. Four is also a ceiling, not a commitment — the approval permits the games, it does not schedule them.
What it says about the organization is straightforward enough. San Antonio has spent this offseason building optionality into everything: the extension structure, the veteran contracts, and now the home schedule itself. A franchise that has never had much natural leverage in league economics is manufacturing some.
For fantasy managers, international dates matter at the margins. Games in Europe come with long travel and occasional rest decisions for veterans, and the January window overlaps with the stretch where weekly-lineup leagues are already juggling schedule strength. Note the Spurs-Pelicans dates when the 2026-27 schedule is released and treat that week as a soft spot for streaming San Antonio’s older role players, not for Wembanyama, who will play.
