ESPN closed out Jeremy Fowler’s annual positional rankings series Thursday with safeties, and Calen Bullock made his first career appearance in the top 10. The Houston Texans‘ third-year free safety landed at No. 10 in the survey of league executives, coaches and scouts, up from honorable mention a year ago — and several voters went further, placing him inside the top five.

The case is built on takeaways. Bullock has nine interceptions through two NFL seasons, and Fowler called him “one of the brightest young ballhawks in the league,” noting he aligned eight or more yards downfield on 86.8 percent of his snaps last season. That is a true center-field deployment, and the league has noticed what he does from it. “He’s probably an adequate-to-average tackler, but his range is elite,” an NFL coordinator told ESPN. “So I value that superpower. I’d rather you take the ball away and just be an adequate tackler than the other way around.”

The tackling caveat is the honest part of the evaluation, and it is the piece Bullock can still improve at 23. But the ranking itself confirms what the back half of Houston’s defense already showed in January: opposing quarterbacks no longer get free access to the deep middle.

Bullock is also the third Texans defender ranked in Fowler’s series this summer, joining Will Anderson Jr. at No. 3 among edge rushers and Azeez Al-Shaair at No. 6 among off-ball linebackers. Teammate Jalen Pitre drew praise in the same safeties piece, with a scout saying he doesn’t “get nearly enough credit” for his work between nickel and safety. A defense this young collecting this much league-wide recognition in one offseason is the clearest sign yet that Houston’s core is arriving together, not one piece at a time.

For fantasy purposes, Bullock matters most in IDP formats: interception-driven scoring is volatile year to year, but nine picks in two seasons is elite big-play upside from the safety spot, and his every-down free safety role keeps the floor stable. In dynasty IDP leagues, a 23-year-old just entering league-wide recognition is a buy before the price finishes climbing.
