The Kansas City Royals were down to nothing Friday night — trailing by three in the bottom of the 10th — and won anyway. Carter Jensen‘s two-run single through a drawn-in left side capped a four-run rally and beat the San Diego Padres 7-6, snapping a five-game losing streak. Per the Associated Press game story, it was Kansas City’s first walk-off win since May 8 and the first game-ending hit of the rookie catcher’s career.

San Diego had seemingly settled it in the top of the inning. Miguel Andujar‘s third double of the night off Lucas Erceg scored the automatic runner, Fernando Tatis Jr. added an RBI single and Xander Bogaerts lifted a sacrifice fly for a 6-3 lead. But Kyle Hart recorded just one out in the bottom half. Salvador Perez singled, Michael Massey — who also had three hits — drove in Vinnie Pasquantino, Nick Loftin beat out a bunt single, Isaac Collins cut the deficit to one with a groundout, and Jensen bounced his third hit into left to score Massey and Loftin.

The comeback rescued a back-and-forth game the Royals had twice led in regulation. Lane Thomas homered — the only Kansas City home run — and Seth Lugo turned in six innings of four-hit, one-earned-run ball before San Diego tied it in the ninth and the game spilled into extras.

At 39-59, none of this changes Kansas City’s August calculus; the front office has already signaled it will move rentals. What a night like this does is showcase the pieces that stay. Jensen went 3-for-5 with two doubles and the winner, and Massey and Perez each delivered in the inning that mattered. For a team playing out a lost season, the young catcher forcing his way into everyday at-bats is the development worth tracking.

The fantasy note is Jensen. Catchers who hit at the bottom of a second-division lineup rarely matter, but three-hit games and rising playing time make him a legitimate two-catcher-league add, and he is the clear Royals bat to speculate on the rest of this week. Lugo, quietly effective again Friday, remains a stream-with-confidence arm wherever he starts next — assuming he is still a Royal by August 3.
