The Calgary Flames organization lost two depth pieces to Russia this week. Goaltender Ivan Prosvetov signed a one-year contract with Avangard Omsk, announced by the KHL on Wednesday, and defenseman Artem Grushnikov is joining the CSKA Moscow organization, per Tony Androckitis of Inside AHL Hockey. Both spent last season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
Neither departure changes Calgary’s NHL roster, but together they thin out the organization’s depth chart in specific ways. Prosvetov split the Wranglers’ crease with Arsenii Sergeev last season and lost the timeshare on merit, going 9-12-2 with an .887 save percentage in 25 games while the younger Sergeev outplayed him. Prosvetov had returned to North America after a strong 2024-25 as CSKA’s starter, where he posted a .920 save percentage, and Avangard acquired his KHL rights to complete the signing — with forward prospect Maxim Sklokin moving back to the CSKA organization in the rights swap, per Pro Hockey Rumors.
Grushnikov’s exit closes a quieter chapter. Dallas drafted the stay-at-home defenseman in the second round in 2021, and Calgary acquired him in the February 2024 three-team trade that sent Chris Tanev to the Stars. He produced eight points in 136 games with the Wranglers and never pushed into the NHL conversation, so a return to the organization where his career began is a sensible reset for both sides.
The practical effect for Calgary is clarity in the AHL crease: Sergeev enters next season as the Wranglers’ clear No. 1, one development rung below the NHL, without a veteran splitting his starts. For an organization that has spent July fielding calls on its NHL roster rather than making additions, sorting the depth chart from the bottom up is at least tidy business.
On the fantasy side, Prosvetov and Grushnikov carried no redraft value, but the ripple matters in deep dynasty leagues: Sergeev’s path just cleared considerably, and a full AHL starter’s workload makes him a more interesting stash for managers speculating on Calgary’s long-term goaltending picture behind Dustin Wolf.
