The Florida Panthers have one salary arbitration case this summer, and it now has a date. Goaltender Akira Schmid is scheduled for an Aug. 1 hearing, according to the full docket obtained by PuckPedia and reported by Pro Hockey Rumors — the last date on a calendar that runs July 20 through Aug. 1.

Schmid was one of 15 players to file before the July 6 deadline. The placement is not accidental: teams can request where their players land on the docket, and Florida, like Montreal and Buffalo, appears to have asked for the back of the line. That buys two more weeks of negotiating room before an arbitrator sets a number the club has to live with.

The player is new to the situation as well as to the market. Florida acquired the 26-year-old Swiss goaltender from the Vegas Golden Knights on June 30 for a third-round pick in the 2028 draft, and he arrives off a career-high 34 appearances in 2025-26 with a .893 save percentage and a 2.59 goals-against average. He carried an $875,000 cap hit on his expiring deal and was issued a qualifying offer of $918,750.

Those save-percentage numbers are the entire negotiation. Arbitrators weigh workload and counting stats alongside comparables, and 34 games is a real body of work for a backup — but .893 is below the line where a goaltender can argue for a meaningful raise. Florida’s counter is straightforward and the gap between the sides should be small in absolute dollars.

It still matters, because the Panthers have roughly $5.871 million in projected cap space and a roster built to spend every dollar of it. Schmid is expected to back up Jacob Markstrom, and a backup’s cap hit is one of the few numbers a contender can still control in mid-July. An award in the $1.5 million range is survivable; anything meaningfully above that eats into whatever depth move Florida still wants to make before camp. Expect a settlement before the hearing — both sides have every incentive to avoid a room where a team argues in detail that its own goaltender is not very good.

In fantasy terms Schmid is a name for deep and dynasty leagues only. Backing up Markstrom on a team that wins a lot of games has real streaming value in win-heavy formats, and Florida’s structure suppresses shot volume enough to prop up ratios. But a .893 season is not a profile that steals a starting job, and Schmid needs a Markstrom injury to matter in standard leagues. Handcuff-only, and only in formats that reward goalie wins.
