The Detroit Red Wings will host a Centennial Celebration game against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Little Caesars Arena, marking 100 years since the franchise played its first NHL game — also against Boston, in 1926. The date was confirmed when Detroit released its 2026-27 schedule on July 16.

The opponent is the point. Detroit entered the league as the Cougars in the fall of 1926 and opened against the Bruins; the club has since gone through two more names, 11 Stanley Cups and the longest playoff streak in the history of North American professional sports. Booking the centennial against the same franchise is the kind of scheduling the league does not always get right, and it lands here.

The season around it is Detroit’s 101st overall and opens at home on Friday, Oct. 2 against the New York Rangers at 6:30 p.m., another Original Six matchup. The Red Wings play seven of their first eight games at Little Caesars Arena, including four straight to start, and will have nine home dates in each of October and January. Of the 84 games — the NHL’s first expanded slate — 28 come against Atlantic Division opponents. Detroit’s regular season ends April 10 in Buffalo.

A centennial year is normally a chance for an organization to sell its own continuity, and Detroit will arrive at November’s ceremony in the middle of the least continuous stretch it has had in years. Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager and executive vice president on July 15 after seven seasons, and the club is running a search with Kris Draper and Shawn Horcoff as internal candidates and Rangers associate GM Ryan Martin among the external names. Whoever gets the job inherits Dylan Larkin‘s trade request, which the Detroit News has called the file at the top of the desk, along with pending restricted free agent business on the blue line and at wing.

That combination — a hundredth-anniversary banner night and a front office that does not yet know who is running it — is what the fall actually looks like in Detroit. The ceremony was booked before the leadership change. It will be held regardless.

In fantasy terms, the useful detail out of Detroit’s schedule is the front-loaded home slate. Seven of the first eight at Little Caesars Arena, in a league where home-ice scoring advantages remain real if modest, makes Detroit’s top-six forwards reasonable early-season streaming targets in weekly formats before the November road stretch through Florida and Tampa Bay. The Red Wings also play a dozen back-to-backs, so goaltending in this crease will be a genuine tandem question rather than a starter-and-spare arrangement.
