Jayden Quaintance underwent successful surgery on his right knee on Wednesday, the San Antonio Spurs announced, a procedure to clean up the meniscus that the team knew was coming when it drafted him 20th overall in June. The 18-year-old big man is expected to miss the start of the 2026-27 season, and Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that a return could come at some point in 2027.

The surgery is the latest chapter in a medical file that pushed Quaintance out of the lottery. He tore an ACL in February 2025 as a 17-year-old freshman at Arizona State, then played only four games for Kentucky in 2025-26 while dealing with complications from that injury. On draft night he acknowledged he was still feeling “a little pain” in the knee.

San Antonio drafted him anyway, and general manager Brian Wright framed the decision as an informed one rather than a gamble. “We do our homework and we’ve got a great medical team that’s very thorough in their analysis and process,” Wright told Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News. “We spent time with (Quaintance’s) representatives going through where he is in his rehabilitation process and what the options are. We got comfortable about what that looks like today and then the long-term prognosis as well.”

What San Antonio bought at No. 20 was the defensive profile. In 29.5 minutes per game as a freshman at Arizona State, Quaintance averaged 2.6 blocks and 1.1 steals — the kind of rim-protection baseline that, paired with Victor Wembanyama, could eventually give the Spurs a frontcourt no one wants to drive into. That pairing is now a 2027-28 proposition at the earliest.

The roster was already built for this. San Antonio traded up for the 26th pick in June to take Tarris Reed Jr., a more NBA-ready big, and Reed spent Summer League auditioning for the backup center minutes behind Wembanyama. Quaintance traveled with the Summer League team but never played. The Spurs’ next real update on him will likely come at media day in late September.

For fantasy purposes, Quaintance is a dynasty-only hold and nothing more. He has no redraft value in any format and should not occupy a bench spot in a one-year league; in deep dynasty setups, the ACL history plus a second knee procedure before his first NBA game makes him a stash you buy at a discount rather than one you spend real capital on. Reed is the Spurs rookie big with actual 2026-27 minutes ahead of him, and he is the more sensible waiver-wire name in deep leagues.
