The math at the top of the AL Central is as tight as any division race in baseball. Cleveland also carried a four-game winning streak into the break and sits 51-46; the two clubs have essentially traded the lead since their four-game split in Cleveland over the July 4 weekend. The Minnesota Twins are the complication neither front-runner wanted: 3.0 back at 49-49 and winners of seven of their last ten.
What makes 51-45 remarkable is the baseline. This roster lost 100-plus games three years running, bottoming out at 41-121 in 2024, and the players carrying it now are the ones that rebuild produced. Colson Montgomery reached the break with 23 home runs, Miguel Vargas with 21 and Munetaka Murakami with 20, and the lineup that scored 12 on Friday was built almost entirely from the rebuild’s draft picks and trade returns.
The honest caveat: a half-game lead in mid-July guarantees nothing, and Cleveland has the easier claim to pedigree in this race. The Guardians have been here before; this White Sox group has not played a meaningful August game together. The next two weeks — with the August 3 trade deadline forcing both front offices to declare intentions — will tell us more about the division than the current standings do.
For fantasy purposes, the takeaway is that White Sox bats have become startable at volume, not just at the top. Montgomery, Vargas and Murakami are locked in everywhere, but the supporting cast — Sam Antonacci and Braden Montgomery in particular — is producing counting stats in a lineup that keeps turning over. With two more games in Toronto’s hitter-friendly park this weekend, Sox hitters are a reasonable streaming target in daily formats.
