The Philadelphia Phillies did what a contender is supposed to do with the division lead in sight, beating the New York Mets 6-1 on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park behind a clean start from Jesús Luzardo and home runs from Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber.
Luzardo carried the afternoon. He worked five innings, allowed two hits and one run, walked two and struck out seven to move to 9-4. The bullpen finished the job without a hiccup: Orion Kerkering, José Alvarado and Chase Shugart combined for four scoreless innings, with Shugart striking out two over the final two frames.
Turner set the pace with a 3-for-4 day and a solo home run, and Schwarber’s two-run shot did the heavy lifting in the middle innings. Bryce Harper drove in two runs without leaving the yard, going 1-for-4. The lineup didn’t need one big inning against Sean Manaea, who took the loss after allowing four runs over 4 2/3 innings — it just kept applying pressure, and that was enough.
New York’s only run came on a Tyrone Taylor home run, one of the few bright spots on a quiet night for a lineup that has become a fixture of trade speculation.
The result matters in the standings. Philadelphia moved to 55-44 and, with the Atlanta Braves falling to Texas, trimmed the NL East deficit to two games. The Phillies have spent most of the season a step behind Atlanta. Nights like this are how they erase it.
For fantasy managers, Luzardo is back to looking like a start-him-anywhere arm, with the strikeout upside that made him a target in the first place. Turner remains a set-and-forget option atop a productive order, and Schwarber’s power keeps him among the steadiest sources of homers and RBI in the format. Kerkering’s clean hold is worth a note in holds leagues, where his late-inning role keeps firming up.
