The Tampa Bay Rays still lead the American League East. The margin is no longer comfortable. Saturday’s 7-6 loss in Boston was Tampa Bay’s fourth straight defeat, and it trimmed the Rays’ division lead to two games over the New York Yankees, down from a cushion that looked commanding when the month began.

The math is plain. Tampa Bay is 56-41, still the best record in the division, but the Rays have gone cold at the same moment the Boston Red Sox have caught fire. Boston has won twelve in a row and cut what was a 14 1/2-game deficit on July 1 down to seven. A lead that once absorbed a bad week now leaves far less room for one.

There is no single alarm in the underlying performance. Jonny DeLuca and Victor Mesa Jr. both homered Saturday, and the offense is not the problem it can appear during a losing streak. The trouble across this stretch has been timing: run prevention that has cracked in the innings that decide one-run games, including a four-run seventh at Fenway that turned a 6-3 lead into a loss. Over 162 games those innings tend to even out. Over a four-day slide against a hot opponent, they compound.

None of this changes what Tampa Bay is. The Rays own the division’s best record and a rotation built to protect leads, and a four-game skid in mid-July is the kind of slump good teams shake off. But the standings now read as a race rather than a coronation, and with the trade deadline three weeks away, a shrinking lead is the sort of thing that pushes a contender to add rather than stand pat.

For fantasy purposes the skid changes little. DeLuca went deep Saturday and is a reasonable streaming outfielder in deeper leagues while he hits near the top of the order; Mesa is a bench-or-watch add whose playing time is less secure. The Rays’ relievers are worth monitoring this week, because a bullpen that has coughed up late leads can reshuffle roles quickly, and save chances in Tampa Bay have been spread around.
