The San Francisco 49ers report their veterans Saturday, and the biggest question in camp isn’t a position battle — it’s whether their best tight end will be on the field at all. San Jose Mercury News reporter Cam Inman wrote Sunday that George Kittle‘s recovery from a torn right Achilles is “the 49ers’ biggest question, and until he is cleared, they are in a bind, entering training camp with essentially the same options from last season.”
The timeline is the tension. Kittle ruptured the Achilles in the wild-card win at Philadelphia in January, which puts the Rams opener in Melbourne on September 10 just under eight months out — aggressive but reachable for an Achilles return. The alternative path is the one Inman flagged: if Kittle opens camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list and stays there into the season, he would miss at least the first four games, and as Inman put it, no one would blame the 49ers for protecting the most productive tight end in franchise history.
What sharpens the bind is that San Francisco built no insurance behind him. The 49ers didn’t draft a tight end in April and haven’t signed a veteran. The room behind Kittle starts with Jake Tonges, who parlayed career highs of 34 catches, 293 yards and five touchdowns in 2025 into a two-year, $8 million extension this offseason. Tonges earned that deal, but he earned it as a complement — the offense Kyle Shanahan actually wants to run treats the tight end as a featured piece, not a safety valve.
The money underlines how central Kittle remains to the plan. His four-year, $76.4 million extension from April 2025 is still the richest contract ever signed by a tight end, and it carries a $14.1 million cap hit this season. In an 11-game 2025, he still produced 57 catches, 628 yards and seven touchdowns. This roster was rebuilt this offseason to contend now, and most of the pieces are cooperating — which is exactly why the one position with no fallback plan is the one worth watching when practice opens July 26. A healthy Kittle makes this a footnote by August. Until he’s cleared, it’s the storyline.
