The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp Wednesday with a starting quarterback and no competition for the job — officially. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote Sunday that the second part could change, because Jacoby Brissett still hasn’t been paid like the first part is true.
The outline of the standoff is familiar by now. Brissett is playing on the two-year deal he signed in 2025 to be a backup, worth $6.25 million per year, and the Cardinals have not adjusted it since he became the unquestioned starter. He skipped the voluntary portion of the offseason program, reported for mandatory minicamp as required, and is expected to show up Wednesday. Florio’s question is what happens after that: a starting quarterback typically does far more than the minimum, and a hold-in — reporting to camp but declining to practice until the contract moves — remains on the table. Florio notes the market for veteran starters currently runs from the low $20 millions to the mid-$60 millions, a range Brissett’s deal doesn’t approach from any direction.
There is a wrinkle that makes this negotiation different from most: Brissett represents himself. Every conversation about his value happens directly between the player and the front office, with no agent to absorb the friction. That cuts both ways — nothing gets lost in translation, and nothing gets softened either.
If Brissett does hold in, the practice reps go somewhere, and that’s where this stops being only a contract story. Gardner Minshew took first-team work during the spring while Brissett stayed away, and rookie Carson Beck is behind him. Florio’s read is that Beck gets a real look at some point regardless — Arizona needs to know what it has in him before committing to any quarterback plans beyond this season. Every practice Brissett sits out moves that evaluation up the calendar. For a franchise that has spent this offseason installing Mike LaFleur’s offense around its young core, the developmental math is simple: the standoff that costs the Cardinals certainty at the top of the depth chart buys them information everywhere below it. Deal or no deal, Wednesday starts the clock.
