The record sale of the Seattle Seahawks was closer than the announcement let on. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, the final stage of the process came down to two groups trading bids like an auction: the group led by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla on one side, and the group led by Celtics limited partner Aditya Mittal on the other. One side would top the other, the other would raise, and the process ended with the Khosla group at $9.612 billion — the highest price ever paid for an NFL franchise.
Money was not the only thing that decided it. Per Florio’s source, the Khosla plan to make Neeru Khosla — Vinod’s wife — the team’s controlling owner appealed to Jody Allen, who has run the franchise since her brother Paul Allen’s death in 2018. A spokesperson for the Paul G. Allen Estate declined to go beyond last week’s statement when Florio asked whether the succession structure factored into the outcome.
The controlling-owner question matters more than it might appear. Every NFL team must designate a single controlling owner with the power to cast the franchise’s votes on league matters, and every year that owner must name a successor in the event of death or incapacitation. Who holds that seat shapes how the Seahawks operate at the four quarterly league meetings and on every ownership vote in between — which is why the estate’s comfort with the Khosla structure carried real weight in a process this close.
The sale still requires approval from NFL owners, with a vote expected at the league meeting on August 26. Until then, Jody Allen remains in charge of a franchise that opens defense of its Super Bowl LX title on September 9 against New England — meaning the champions will spend all of training camp, and possibly the season’s opening weeks, with ownership in transition. The football operation has given no indication that the handover will touch the roster or the front office before the vote, and for a team this settled on the field, the quietest transition available is the right one.
