The Cleveland Browns‘ quarterback competition spent the past week in a configuration nobody would have predicted in April: Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, the two men fighting for the starting job, co-hosted a joint passing camp for teammates in Miami. Sanders spoke about it Sunday at his own youth football camp in Cleveland, in video posted by Browns beat reporter Scott Petrak — the first extended on-record comments on the trip after days of social-media glimpses, and the latest turn in a competition this desk has tracked since spring.
“I think it was extremely important that us as a group — whoever was available — to come down to Miami,” Sanders said. “For those who came, it was really amazing. We felt a different type of bond outside of the facility.” Per Heavy’s J.R. DeGroote, the group included Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, Isaiah Bond, rookie receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, Jamari Thrash and running back Dylan Sampson.
The reason this matters is what it rules out. The most realistic way this competition damages the 2026 Browns was never the depth chart — it was the locker room splitting into camps behind two quarterbacks. Sanders was asked earlier this offseason about quarterbacks organizing rival workouts and forcing teammates to pick one. “Nah, we’re all team,” he said then. “We’re all going to come as one.” A shared camp, with both quarterbacks throwing to the same receiver group, is the verifiable version of that answer — timing work that carries over whichever man wins the job.
It settles nothing about the job itself. Todd Monken has not named a starter and said at the end of OTAs that he leans a different direction almost daily: “I just tell you, we’ve got two starting-level quarterbacks.” Watson has the experience and looked healthy in spring after missing all of 2025; Sanders closed the gap through OTAs and minicamp. The real evaluation starts against a live pass rush. Rookies report Thursday, July 23, veterans follow July 28, and the first full-squad practice is July 29, with nine open practices in Berea starting July 31.
For fantasy purposes, neither quarterback is draftable until the job is settled — this is a monitor-into-August situation, with preseason snap order the first hard signal. The receivers are a different story: a week of timing work with both quarterbacks means Jeudy, Tillman and the rookies don’t face a September reset regardless of the winner, and Sampson showing up to throw after missing the offseason program with an injury is a small but real positive for his hold on the RB2 role.
