Rashee Rice is expected to be on the field when the Kansas City Chiefs open training camp, coach Andy Reid said, resolving one of the franchise’s most closely watched offseason questions. Per NFL.com, Reid said he anticipates the receiver being ready after Rice served a 30-day jail sentence this spring and underwent offseason knee surgery, with early reports on the knee described as positive.

The jail term stemmed from a probation violation — a positive test for THC — tied to Rice’s July 2025 guilty plea on felony charges connected to a 2024 multi-vehicle crash in Dallas. He served a six-game suspension to open the 2025 season under the personal conduct policy for that incident. Separately, the NFL closed an investigation into domestic-violence allegations against Rice in April 2026 and announced no discipline, finding he had not violated the policy.

What remains, for now, is a football question. When healthy, Rice is one of Patrick Mahomes‘ most dependable targets. Kansas City reports 13 receivers to camp, and the room’s shape depends heavily on whether Rice’s knee holds up to a full practice schedule.

The detail worth watching is the calendar. Camp opens July 29, and how Rice participates early — full, limited, or managed — will say more about his readiness than any offseason statement. The Chiefs have navigated his absences before; they would prefer not to plan around another.

For now the expectation, from the head coach himself, is that Rice reports on time and ready. Kansas City will take it, and adjust only if the knee, or the league, says otherwise.
