The New York Rangers have hired Jonathan Quick as their director of goaltending development, Mollie Walker of the New York Post reported Tuesday, about three months after Quick retired following the 2025-26 season. The club also added former Rangers center Derick Brassard as a player development assistant, a hire Walker reported and Colin Stephenson of Newsday confirmed.
Walker reported the Rangers wanted Quick in the organization before the season ended but needed time to work out the specifics of the role. The fit was never in question. Quick spent the final three seasons of his 19-year career as the Rangers’ backup, and he retires with a résumé that will get Hall of Fame consideration: 410 wins, 12th-most in NHL history, 65 shutouts, and two Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles Kings, including the 2012 run in which he posted a .929 save percentage and a league-leading 10 shutouts before finishing second in Vezina voting to Henrik Lundqvist.
The job comes with immediate work. Igor Shesterkin is signed long term, but behind him the Rangers have a genuine competition between veteran Joonas Korpisalo and Dylan Garand, the homegrown prospect the club extended in June. Quick spent the last three years sharing a room with both Shesterkin and Garand; now he oversees the pipeline that decides who inherits the role he just vacated.
Brassard brings a different résumé to the development staff: 1,013 NHL games across 16 seasons, including four as a fixture in the Rangers’ middle six from 2012 to 2016, when he produced his two best offensive seasons — 60 points in 2014-15 and a career-high 27 goals the following year. His group includes forward prospects Noah Laba, Malcolm Spence, and Liam Greentree, the kind of young players who will determine how quickly the Rangers’ retooling produces NHL contributors.
For fantasy purposes, the hire matters at the margins of the Rangers’ crease. Shesterkin’s workload is not in question, but Quick’s direct oversight of Garand’s development is worth tracking in dynasty formats — if Garand beats out Korpisalo for the backup job, he becomes the clear handcuff to one of the league’s premier starters, with Korpisalo’s modest streaming value fading accordingly.
