The left fielder clears roster space as New York makes September depth moves.

The Mets designated outfielder MJ Melendez for assignment, per ESPN's Jorge Castillo. The move came hours after New York selected relief pitcher Robert Stock and infielder Bryce Conley to the 40-man roster. Melendez, 27, appeared in 12 games this season with a .323 average (10-for-31) and 2 home runs.

Melendez has five years of major league experience but has not established consistent playing time in the majors. The DFA opens a roster spot as the Mets navigate their September stretch-run additions.
