The short answer
Patrick Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas in September 1995 and grew up in Whitehouse, Texas — a town of about 8,000 just south of Tyler. He’s the son of MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr. and Randi Martin. He attended Whitehouse High School, where he played varsity football, baseball, and basketball, and committed to play both football (quarterback) and baseball (pitcher) at Texas Tech in 2014.

A two-sport pro family in East Texas

Pat Mahomes Sr. was an MLB pitcher from 1992 to 2003 — Twins, Red Sox, Mets, Rangers, Cubs, Pirates. The family lived primarily in the Tyler area during the off-seasons. Patrick spent summers in MLB clubhouses as a kid; widely-reproduced photos show him in a Mets uniform at Shea Stadium with Mike Piazza in 2000 (when he was 4) and at Texas Rangers spring training with Alex Rodriguez and Ivan Rodriguez (around age 6).

Whitehouse is a small town on Highway 110 between Tyler and Bullard. Pat’s parents divorced when Patrick was young; he was raised primarily by his mother. His half-brother Jackson Mahomes (a TikTok personality) and sister Mia were born after Patrick. The family lived in a four-bedroom house off South Main Street, walking distance to Whitehouse High.

Whitehouse High: three-sport varsity

Mahomes started at quarterback for the Whitehouse Wildcats from his sophomore year (2011) through senior year (2013). He threw for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns as a senior — Class 4A Texas was a passing-friendly division at the time. He also pitched in baseball (95 mph fastball as a junior) and started at point guard in basketball, finishing top-5 in the school in steals.

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury — fresh off coaching Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M — was the only Power 5 football head coach to recruit Mahomes specifically as a quarterback. Most Big 12 and SEC schools wanted him as a wide receiver or athlete. Tech offered the chance to play QB and the chance to also play baseball. Mahomes committed during his junior year and signed in February 2014.

Whitehouse after Mahomes

Whitehouse High retired Mahomes’ football #5 jersey in February 2018 — the spring before his MVP-winning first full season as Chiefs starter. The school’s football stadium was renamed Patrick Mahomes II Stadium in 2020 after Super Bowl LIV. The school’s enrollment grew by about 18% between 2018 and 2024, attributed in part to families moving to the Whitehouse Independent School District for the basketball/football programs.

Mahomes funds the Whitehouse football team’s annual equipment budget through his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation. He returned to Whitehouse in spring 2024 to dedicate a new community center the foundation funded. He still owns property in Whitehouse and visits frequently in the offseason.
